Chapter 48 What Are You Doing?
After the first class ended, even more girls gathered around the back door of the classroom, but Chen Ciyi was still asleep, completely unaware. The second period was math class, and the math teacher was even more exaggerated. Normally, she was as terrifying as Voldemort—just hearing her name made people want to hide. Even the chemistry teacher, who was known for yelling, seemed as gentle as a little weakling in comparison. During this class, seeing Chen Ciyi asleep and the commotion at the back door caused by his admirers seriously disrupting the lesson, the teacher not only didn’t get angry or intimidate the class into trembling with fear but even lowered his voice while lecturing. Halfway through explaining the first problem on the test that needed correction, hearing the students behind him whispering about his unusual behavior, he turned around and softly said, “Quiet, don’t disturb the full-score student in the back row while he’s sleeping.”
Perhaps because Voldemort was unusually kind today, even turning criticism into a joke, the rest of the class immediately brightened up with just a little encouragement. Not only did they grow bolder, but they also instantly became lively. The moment he finished speaking, the entire class collectively let out a sarcastic “Pfft~” in unison. Instead of getting angry, the math teacher actually smiled at them and said, “If all of you could score full marks, I wouldn’t care if you slept either. If you’re hot, I’d even fan you!”
After the whole class questioned him with another “Tch~” and mixed in some murmurs about his inhumanly abnormal behavior today, he finally reverted to his usual self, “Shut up! Whoever speaks next will have to explain this problem on the blackboard!”
Instantly, the classroom fell silent.
The class dragged on painfully with everyone struggling to understand, their faces full of frustration. By the second long break, it was time for the morning exercises, and today happened to be Xu Yannuo and Chen Ciyi’s turn for duty.
After briefly feeling happy for him earlier that morning, Xu Yannuo had been suppressing her anger—partly because Chen Ciyi was asleep, and partly because she couldn’t make a scene with teachers and classmates around. Moreover, Chen Ciyi was no longer the thorn in every teacher’s side but had instead become an untouchable, precious darling.
At this moment, all the classmates had gone out for the morning exercises, and Chen Ciyi finally woke up groggily.
Xu Yannuo walked back to Chen Chenyi’s side with a mop handle. The moment Chen Chenyi opened his eyes, his vision was still blurry, but as soon as it cleared, he saw Xu Yannuo standing in front of him with a fierce expression, and the classroom was completely empty.
“Whoa, hey, deskmate!” Chen Chenyi was so startled that he instantly became alert. In fact, he literally jumped up as if his tail had been stepped on, and while leaping, he reflexively raised his hands to shield his face.
“Studying pretty hard, huh, deskmate?” Xu Yannuo sneered coldly.
Chen Chenyi was just about to proudly say “of course,” but when he saw the mop handle in Xu Yannuo’s hand, he quickly shut his mouth. He extended a finger and pushed the mop handle away from his face. “Deskmate, what are you doing?”
Damn, still asking what she wants to do. “What do you think I want to do? I haven’t slept well these past few days. Seeing the way those teachers look at you makes me worried. And you? You’re such a good student, yet you don’t say anything?”
Just as the mop handle was about to strike again, Chen Ciyi immediately pointed toward the classroom door, “Hey, someone’s back.”
Almost simultaneously, Xu Yannuo immediately put down the mop, sat back in his seat, transformed instantly into a docile lamb, picked up the top book on the desk, and began reading obediently.
Chen Ci let out a sigh of relief and sat back in his seat. He had just woken up, his brain still in a foggy, half-shut-down state, not fully booted up yet, when this sudden bolt from the blue hit him. Luckily, his volatile deskmate had a weakness.
Chen Ci clutched his chest, finally catching his breath—well, not quite finished catching it—when Xu Yannuo realized he had tricked her. She immediately grabbed the mop by her feet again. Fortunately, by this point, Chen Ci was fully awake, and his reflexes had returned to their usual sharpness. Seeing her about to swing, he pushed off the back of his chair with one hand, leaped up, and swiftly dodged Xu Yannuo’s mop blockade, then bolted toward the front of the classroom where the teacher’s podium was.
But when it comes to physical agility, Xu Yannuo wasn’t bad either. Although she was short and had stubby legs, she moved quickly, and the classroom wasn’t that big. No matter how much Chen Ciyi ran, he couldn’t go far. When he reached the front door, he discovered that some jerk had locked it from the outside when they left.
Chen Ciyi vaulted over a row of desks with his hands, dodging Xu Yannuo who was chasing him from behind, and began running back the other way. As he ran, he tried to explain, “Deskmate, calm down! Just listen to me—”
“Listen to my ass! Right now, I feel like a complete idiot,” Xu Yannuo retorted, still swinging the mop as she continued chasing him.
“Hey, no, I told you before to trust me, to believe in your desk mate, but you didn’t,” Chen Ciyi kept running without stopping his legs, explaining while looking back as he ran.
Hearing this, Xu Yannuo stopped in her tracks, as if… that was indeed the case!
Seeing no footsteps chasing after him, Chen Ciyi finally stopped too, then took two more steps back to ensure tactical perfection in case Xu Yannuo suddenly remembered something else and came charging at him again unpredictably. He maintained a safe distance before stopping to observe her.
After stopping, he noticed Xu Yannuo was still standing there dazed, lost in thought, so he felt compelled to remind her again, “Desk mate, don’t act impulsively. This is school, after all. The courtyard is full of students doing morning exercises.” The school was his greatest protective shield.
Xu Yannuo snapped out of it, “You’re right, it’s not entirely your fault. Alright, let’s clean up.”
Because of the initial fight incident, they had just finished cleaning and rested for a short while when the morning exercise ended. Soon after, the hallway became noisy with the sounds of footsteps and conversations. Then, the noise grew closer and louder, and students began to push the classroom door open one after another.
But it wasn’t class time yet. At this moment, a group of girls had gathered outside the classroom again to catch a glimpse of Chen Ciyi. During the previous two breaks, Chen Ciyi had been asleep for some reason, but now he was finally awake. He noticed quite a few girls at the door, smiling and pointing at him. Some were smoothing their hair, playfully nudging and teasing each other, while others held up their phone cameras, pretending to take selfies aimed at him.
Chen Ciyi frowned slightly in annoyance, then nudged Xu Yannuo’s arm.
Xu Yannuo was tidying up her messy desk compartment, where things kept falling out. She kept shoving them back in haphazardly and snapped irritably, “What?”
Chen Ciyi ignored her grumpy tone and asked, “Do I look like an ape or some kind of mythical creature?” It couldn’t be—he thought he was quite handsome. Even the six-year-old girl next door had called him handsome.
Xu Yannuo’s hands paused mid-tidying. Instantly, books and workbooks from the desk compartment clattered to the floor. She turned to look at him and said, “Don’t flatter yourself. If you were a mythical creature, you’d have been hauled off for research long ago.”
