Chapter 40: What Type Do You Like?

Xu Yannuo turned her head in surprise and glanced at Chen Ciyi. “I was joking.” She had just blurted it out—bantering with him had become a habit—but she didn’t actually blame him. She knew those past events were just there, lurking as potential problems. Even without Chen Ciyi, something like today would have happened sooner or later, just a matter of time.

“Not really blaming you.” After saying that, she took out the candy from her pocket, carefully divided it into two equal halves, and then grabbed one half to place on Chen Ciyi’s desk. Looking at him, she added, “Don’t try to steal mine after you finish yours.”

Afterward, there was the rustling sound of candy wrappers, muffled by the buzzing noise of the class, so nothing else could be heard clearly. After eating two large pieces of chocolate, Xu Yannuo asked Chen Ciyi, “Actually, that girl with the dark eyeliner isn’t bad. Someone with a princess complex like her is willing to humble herself to pursue you—aren’t you considering it?”

Hearing this, Chen Ciyi paused mid-chew of his chocolate. Dark eyeliner? It dawned on him—the girl’s eye sockets were so dark, like a panda’s. Chen Ciyi couldn’t help but laugh. He turned to Xu Yannuo and asked, “Do you really think I should consider it?”

Xu Yannuo nodded. “Yeah.”

Chen Ciyi shook his head and continued unwrapping the next candy. “I’m not into that type.”

Xu Yannuo suddenly became interested, nudging him with her elbow, her face full of gossipy curiosity. “So, what type do you like? Tell me!”

Chen Ciyi put the candy in his mouth, thought for a moment, then frowned and looked at Xu Yannuo. “I don’t know either.”

As he spoke, two pink envelopes slid out from under the desk. Chen Ciyi stared at them in surprise, clearly taken aback. Xu Yannuo bent down to pick them up—the envelopes were adorned with little hearts, unmistakably love letters.

Xu Yannuo glanced at Chen Ciyi, clicked her tongue twice, and handed the envelopes back to him. Chen Ciyi looked at her as if she were an idiot. “Why give them to me? They’re not mine.”

Xu Yannuo was speechless. If the letter that fell out of your desk wasn’t yours, whose could it be? Even pretending to be dumb shouldn’t be this half-hearted. Of course, at this moment, Xu Yannuo didn’t yet know that Chen Ciyi was genuinely clueless.

Chen Ciyi didn’t take it, but having this thing seen by the teacher wouldn’t reflect well on him. The chemistry teacher had already been annoyed once by the girls watching him at the door. Xu Yannuo thought for a moment, then bent down and forcefully stuffed the pink envelope back into Chen Ciyi’s desk. But as soon as she did, a pile of other pink envelopes came tumbling out, scattering across the floor. There had to be at least a dozen of them.

Both of them looked over in surprise. Chen Ciyi frowned with displeasure and asked Xu Yannuo, “What’s wrong with you No. 8 High School people? Why do you love stuffing trash into transfer students’ desks so much?” Having only transferred recently, he’d already found his desk filled with this kind of junk several times. And the color was downright terrifying.

Xu Yannuo had initially wanted to snap back at him, but remembering his earlier kindness, she decided to play along with his clueless act. “Well, maybe it’s just a special welcome tradition at No. 8 High.” Then, curiosity got the better of her—hadn’t he ever received love letters at his previous school? With that face, that aura, those long legs of his, it seemed impossible. “Didn’t No. 2 High welcome you like this before?”

Chen Ciyi looked at her, “I had a lot of competitions last semester and didn’t go to school much.” But he didn’t think so. He couldn’t really recall, and even on the rare occasions he did go, he never looked inside the desk.
