Chapter 64: Taking You Somewhere on Saturday
Great Acting Skills at the Same Table?
Xu Yannuo glared at Chen Ci, extending her leg under the table to kick his shin. “You say I have great acting skills? How dare you say I have great acting skills?” How could he, who deceived heaven and earth, fooled the entire school, and even had her wrapped around his finger, have the nerve to compliment her acting?
Xu Yannuo quickly recalled the words Chen Ciyi had said when they first met. “On your first day here, you went to play basketball with the sports scholarship students during lunch, and when you came back, you told me they forced you to go—that they’d beat you up if you didn’t keep them company playing ball?” Now it seems like they were the ones who went out of their way to play with him!
“At night, you’d wait for me at the internet cafe, making up excuses about being afraid of the dark just so I’d walk you home?”
Xu Yannuo counted on her fingers, listing them out one by one. “Li Wei came to threaten you, and you pretended to be weak. Afterward, he got targeted by vocational school kids who robbed him, and he had no choice but to use you as a scapegoat. Then you called me to save you?” Did he even need saving? She had always felt something was off that night—the way those guys were pinning him down seemed so strained and awkward. Now it made sense: those poor guys had already been beaten up by him, and when they saw her coming, he threatened them into acting it out for her. And then she showed up and beat them up again! Thinking about it this way, it all fell into place. Otherwise, how could a bunch of troublemaking vocational school kids, who never studied properly, be so easy to take down? She hadn’t even put in much effort before they scrambled away like their lives depended on it!
Xu Yannuo raised another finger and continued counting. “And that time you came back from the cafeteria or school supermarket, you said one of Li Wei’s buddies from another class threatened you and even hit you? ‘You’re so pitiful, you’re so miserable’?” But this time, she had seen through it. Although she thought at the time that even if he wasn’t actually hit, he must have been scared after being threatened. After all, Li Wei and his crew were all talk—they loved acting tough but turned useless the moment they ran into someone who could actually fight.
At this thought, Xu Yannuo suddenly imagined how Li Wei and the others would react if they found out Chen Ciyi’s true identity. Recalling all the stupid things they had done before, they’d probably be scared out of their wits on the spot. The thought of their dramatic facial expressions made Xu Yannuo burst out laughing again.
Across from her, Chen Ciyi watched Xu Yannuo. Seeing that she had stopped criticizing him point by point and was instead laughing, he felt an even stronger chill run down his spine.
He looked at her with concern. “Deskmate! Are… are you okay? You’re not… angry to the point of losing your mind, are you?” After tentatively calling out to her, he even waved a hand in front of her eyes.
Xu Yannuo snapped back to reality and resumed her stern, interrogative expression. “Be serious. I’m criticizing you here. Do you even have any sense of remorse? Who do you think you’re fooling?”
After speaking, Xu Yannuo began counting on her fingers again, ready to continue.
Chen Ciyi glanced at the table but couldn’t find anything suitable to make amends and stop her on the spot. He grabbed a skewer of lamb and handed it over, sighing, “Alright, alright, my bad. Let’s stop counting—it’s all in the past. We’re brothers, after all. Why is your memory so sharp when it comes to useless things?”
Useless things?
Xu Yannuo had initially planned to let it slide—after all, they were brothers. But “useless things”? She glared back at him. “Chen Ciyi, you seem so aloof and reserved. Do your little admirers know you’re such a smooth talker with a sharp tongue?” Who knew you’d turn out like this after getting familiar, Chen Ciyi.
Chen Ciyi quickly changed his tune: “It’s useful, it’s useful. My mistake, don’t be angry. I’ll take you somewhere this Saturday.”
