Qi Yang didn’t immediately go to take the card, but the supervisor seemed to notice someone had come out and turned to look at him from afar. At that time there was some distance between them, and the man’s silhouette gradually moved toward Nan Sheng — it couldn’t be the same person in one or two respects, then his face looked different. Qi Yang was amused by the thought.

Waiting here wouldn’t help Yi Xinming and the others, so Qi Yang left the woods and went to get the card.

“Just you?” Qiao Ran glanced behind Qi Yang, clearly quite surprised.

Qi Yang didn’t answer that question; instead he asked, “It only took five hours to get here?”

The supervisor nodded. “Time underground flows differently than up here.” A few minutes below seem like several hours above.

Qi Yang took the card labeled with the number 4 from the glass jar, put it in his pocket and secured it.

Qiao Ran sat directly on a boulder nearby, tilting his head as he looked at Qi Yang with a meaningful gaze. Qi Yang turned and realized Qiao Ran seemed quite interested in him, and this interest was different from Nan Sheng’s or the deceased Zhong Chong’s. The word “dead” made Qi Yang’s eyes darken slightly; he didn’t know what others might face, and that would indeed make choice difficult. This game clearly knew them very well—even the thing Qi Yang had regretted most doing in the past was known.

Qi Yang was able to walk away like that because he himself was the sort of person far calmer and more rational than most; if it had been someone else, they probably would have picked up a knife and charged.

“This is the keepsake I took.” Qiao Ran opened his palm to reveal a small ring, and he wore a matching ring on his left hand.

“Which one did you take?” Qiao Ran was very eager to know what keepsake Qi Yang had chosen.

Qi Yang took out a knife.

“A knife? For cutting fruit?” Qiao Ran stared at the blade and studied it closely, and quickly realized the knife had been sharpened. If it was sharpened, it wasn’t meant for cutting fruit—cutting people was a more likely purpose.

“Sit and rest. It’s still early; we can wait until dark.” Qiao Ran put the ring away. He shifted his body to the side, making space for Qi Yang.

Qi Yang didn’t go over to sit; instead he went to the other side of the giant rock, standing beside the Overseer.

“Worried about your friend?” the Overseer asked.

Qi Yang neither shook his head nor nodded. He was a little worried, but if they really couldn’t get out, it could only be said that each was responsible for themselves.

his fate. Qi Yang had already thought before that if later there came a stage where they couldn’t be together and had to part ways, he would never ask those spirits to obey him and protect Yi Xinming and the others for him. It’s true the spirits would protect him, but every rule has its limits. He had helped them many times already; in the end, he had to face it himself.

Seeing Qi Yang appear calm, the Supervisor smiled. This was exactly the kind of personality he liked—seemingly gentle but in truth absolutely calm and rational.

After waiting perhaps more than ten minutes, someone emerged from the trees. To Qi Yang’s surprise, it was Kang Lian. She, like Qi Yang had earlier, glanced back, saw she was alone, then noticed Qi Yang already sitting on a large rock on the beach and jogged over.

Kang Lian immediately asked, “Yixinming and the others didn’t come?”

Qi Yang gave a flat, terse “hmm.”

“They’re… still in there?” Kang Lian’s voice trembled slightly.

“They should be.” Qi Yang suddenly became sparing with words.

Kang Lian wanted to ask more, but seeing that Qi Yang seemed unwilling to speak, she swallowed the words back.

Seeing the glass bottle appear, Kang Lian was startled for a moment, then learned from Qiao Ran that time underground was different from above; the five hours had already passed. Kang Lian, half believing, half doubting, took a card.

The waiting seemed to pass quickly. By the time it grew dark, no one came out of the woods; Yi Xinming hadn’t appeared, nor had Nan Sheng.

Qiao Ran asked Qi Yang what he meant, whether they should keep waiting.

“No, let’s go.” They’d already waited two or three hours and still hadn’t seen anyone come out; most likely they were trapped in there.

Qi Yang jumped down from the boulder and walked straight onto the yacht. Kang Lian stood at the edge of the rock; she turned to look at the Overseer. “Will they come back out?”

The Overseer shook his head. “I’m only responsible for overseeing whether anyone violates the rules.”

Those words were essentially meaningless. Kang Lian gazed toward the jungle; she found it hard to accept this reality. Just moments ago there had been living people, and in the blink of an eye not even their bodies remained. Especially Nan Sheng—she couldn’t forget when the rotting corpse crawled out from underground to attack them and Nan Sheng smashed its skull with a rock. Someone so formidable was gone.

Kang Lian thought of Yi Xinming again. Over the past two days Yi Xinming had been playing the role of an attentive big brother, taking great care of her, and Kang Lian stood there wanting to wait a little longer.

“Kan Lian, get on the boat!” Qi Yang shouted from the yacht. Kan Lian turned to look at Qi Yang; her eyes were red-rimmed.

“It’s time to go.”

Qi Yang knew Kan Lian didn’t believe this outcome.

He didn’t want to believe it either, but the facts were already obvious enough.

Kang Lian wiped her eyes, dried the tears that were about to fall, and walked toward the yacht. Just as she was about to get on, someone behind her suddenly shouted loudly, “Hey, wait, wait for me, don’t go!”

Kang Lian whipped her head around, and the moment she saw Yang Jiang appear, her expression shifted from delight to a hint of disappointment—she had thought it would be Yi Xinming who came out.

Yang Jiang burst out of the woods and hurriedly ran toward the yacht.

“Wait for me, don’t leave!” Yang Jiang called, waving.

He ran, out of breath, and when he reached the yacht he prepared to climb aboard.

“Don’t get on.” Qiao Ran suddenly said.

Yang Jiang froze. “Why? Why won’t you let me get on?”

“Did you get the card?” Qiao Ran chuckled.

Yang Jiang belatedly realized he’d forgotten the most important thing and asked, “Where do I get the card?”

“Over there.” Kang Lian replied, then pointed to beside the overseer, where a not-so-conspicuous glass bottle sat on the rock.

Yang Jiang ran over and grabbed the card.

Everyone got on the yacht. Yang Jiang felt a little out of it and asked why they were leaving without waiting for others.

Qi Yang sat in the last row of the yacht, his face looking cold, with a hint of fatigue between his brows — as if he wanted to sleep.

“It’s getting dark; going back tonight might not be safe,” Qiao Ran explained.

“But if we leave now, what if they come out after us?” Yang Jiang didn’t understand.

“They probably can’t get out.” Qiao Ran smiled, his expression indifferent.

“No way, how can we not get out? Isn’t it supposed to be simple?”

“For you it’s easy; for others, not necessarily.” Qiao Ran watched Yang Jiang’s nerves of steel and figured that was probably why he managed to survive those choices—others might not have been so lucky.

What puzzled Qiao Ran a little was that Nan Sheng also didn’t choose correctly—whether he truly had chosen wrong or there was some hidden agenda.

The cruise ship sailed away from the beach; on the way back no floating corpses appeared—everything seemed to have wrapped up. Kang Lian leaned against the chair, her eyes still fixed on the island behind them. It wasn’t until the yacht had gone a great distance and the island’s silhouette had completely disappeared from view that she suddenly felt the sea breeze on her skin turn chilling, a bone-deep cold.

The bus was still parked on the shore; a few people were boarding it, and the man in the blue cotton shirt beside Qiao Ran took the driver’s seat.

The coach felt much steadier than the yacht; Qi Yang leaned back against the seat and fell asleep.

When the car reached the inn, Qiao Ran took the initiative to wake Qi Yang.

Qi Yang opened his eyes and saw Qiao Ran; the faint warmth that had been in his eyes instantly faded.

Less than half of those who left had returned. After everyone got back to the inn, they first went to their own rooms to rest. Qi Yang fell into bed and slept as soon as he reached his room.

He woke up hungry in the middle of the night, put on a jacket, and went downstairs. In the downstairs parlor the players were walking around; when they saw Qi Yang come down, Yang Jiang stood up.

Yang Jiang wanted to accompany Qi Yang to the restaurant to eat; when Qi Yang went alone he felt a little uneasy. With Yi Xinming seemingly gone, Yang Jiang began to play Yi Xinming’s role.

“No need, it’s just a meal.” Qi Yang declined Yang Jiang’s company. Yang Jiang was about to say more, but Kang Lian gave him a warning look to stop him.

Walking out of the inn alone, Qi Yang headed to the restaurant. The waiter there treated him with the same extraordinary respect as before. Qi Yang ordered several dishes, and the waiter then recommended some others, carefully explaining that a player named Nan Sheng had specifically instructed him to do so—Qi Yang’s constitution wasn’t very strong and he should eat more nutritious food.

Hearing Nan Sheng’s name unexpectedly come from the mouth of a ghost, Qi Yang looked up and fixed the waiter with a sharp, fierce stare. The waiter took a step back, wondering whether he had said something wrong.

“You seem to get along with him?” Otherwise why would those ghosts listen to Nan Sheng so well.

The waiter immediately grew nervous; he smiled and replied, “No, it’s nothing like that. It just happened that he was the only one who came to give special instructions, so I jotted it down.”

“Then I’ll ask it another way: why do you treat me differently than the other players?” Qi Yang placed his hand on the table and tapped it twice—he had guessed part of the truth and now wanted to see how the waiter would respond.

Cold sweat broke out across the waiter’s back. Not long ago he had been promoted from the ranks of the rotting corpses to restaurant staff; now he suddenly regretted it and would have preferred to go back to being a corpse.

“Is, is there?”

“Is there not?”

“No.” The waiter answered weakly, his voice thin; even he didn’t believe the words.

Seeing the waiter looking like he wanted to crawl into a hole to escape being pressed by him, Qi Yang didn’t press the matter further—he figured there was nothing more to learn by asking.

“Then switch to the dishes he recommended. Hurry up—I’m very hungry,” Qi Yang urged.

Seeing that Qi Yang had finally agreed to let him off, the waiter immediately became overflowing with gratitude. “Right away, right away—we’ll have the chef stir-fry the dishes at once.”

Qi Yang looked out the window; the sky was pitch black. The night here was different from the living world. A smile suddenly curved at the corner of his mouth. One thought lingered in his mind: how did these NPCs come to be? Looking at one or two, they didn’t seem like pure templates but rather real, flesh-and-blood people.

Could it be that possibility?

If that were the case, then this so-called parting of life and death didn’t seem quite so unbearable.

Everyone tacitly agreed not to bring up what happened that day anymore. They were still alive; lingering in the past served no purpose. Since they were still in the game, they had to keep clearing levels.

The next three days of the trip went beyond everyone’s expectations; the check-ins proceeded as smoothly as could be. Not a single player died, not even one was injured. At first some thought they must have missed a hidden task, and as the deadline approached they grew terribly anxious. In the end there really were no hidden tasks — they effortlessly obtained five cards and checked in at five spots.

The attractions included an ancient town and an ice-and-snow city, and they even went to see an arts performance. The players knew the NPCs on stage were all ghosts and that many other ghosts filled the audience, but all the ghosts on and off the stage remained surprisingly quiet until the end of the show—no one lunged at them, let alone swarmed them.

After checking in, they returned safely to the inn. Not only did Yang Jiang not understand what had happened the whole time, Qi Yang also felt the difference between these three days and the previous three was too obvious. The game seemed to have suddenly changed, becoming gentler—no longer a horror game, but a realistic-experience game.

In the middle they also visited a rose garden, where roses blazed in every shade of purple and red; the players had a great time there, and someone even complained that it would be nice to have a phone to take pictures to bring back to the real world.

The last three days and the first three days seemed to pass at different speeds; the latter three flew by in a blink.

On the sixth night, Yang Jiang slumped on the sofa in the inn’s first-floor lobby. He almost felt as if this were no longer the world of a horror game; even the innkeeper and the staff suddenly seemed kind and amiable.

Unlike Yang Jiang’s overly relaxed vigilance, Kang Lian hadn’t forgotten where they were. She specifically reminded Yang Jiang to be careful, not to let his guard down. But Yang Jiang just smiled and said Kang Lian was overthinking things — maybe the game was designed that way. The first few days had kept everyone on edge; after those days it was safe, so why be so cautious? Tomorrow was the seventh day, and the check-in would be simple: two places. One was the cableway halfway up the mountain, the other was Sifang Street. From the names alone it was obvious how effortless it would be.

Kang Lian saw that Yang Jiang no longer looked afraid; no matter what she said he wouldn’t listen, and she was too lazy to waste her breath—besides, it was as if she were the one pressuring him to be careful.

The other party didn’t appreciate it, and neither did Kang Lian.

She stopped persuading and walked off to one side.

Qi Yang once thought he might have trouble sleeping—after all, someone he had just accepted as a friend suddenly left—but over the past few days he basically fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

The only thing that made Qi Yang a bit uncomfortable was that his morning sickness had been pretty bad these past few days—just catching a faint smell made his throat turn. When he could bear it, Qi Yang held on; when he couldn’t, he either walked away or made up some excuse, which no one questioned. Besides, everyone pretty much knew Qi Yang’s constitution was weak.

The last day of the seven-day journey arrived. After several calm days of recuperation, the players’ spirits were generally good; of the original twenty-four, only six remained.

Everyone had risen early that morning, and they had become fairly harmonious with one another—after all, surviving this long was the result of their collective efforts.

They went to the restaurant together, then rode in cars to the glass cableway. The bus ran out of fuel before reaching You, so the six of them split into two cars—Yang Jiang drove one, and Qiao Ran’s teammate Zhou Cheng drove the other.

The cable car was a bit far away, about an hour and a half by car; it sat halfway up the mountain, and the supervisor had been waiting below the mountainside there ahead of time.

“…There are two ways to reach the mountainside,” Fu Mingnan suggested.

“Which two?” The moment Yang Jiang saw the mountain rising into the clouds he felt dizzy; by the time they climbed halfway up, two hours would stretch into three.

“Drawing lots.” Fu Mingnan placed a small black paper box to his right.

“Drawing lots? How does that work?” Yang Jiang walked up to the box and examined it from all sides.

Fu Mingnan reached into the box and pulled out a small black ball. He said, “Whoever draws a black ball can take the cable car to the ropeway; whoever draws a white ball will have to do their best to climb.”

“Don’t tell me there’s only that one black ball in there?” Yang Jiang said skeptically.

Fu Mingnan put the black ball back in, then grabbed the front of the box and gave it a gentle pull. The front panel came off, revealing that the black and white balls inside were basically split down the middle.

“Please, have one.” Fu Mingnan made a inviting gesture, then turned his gaze to Qi Yang. Qi Yang’s face had been holding up these past two days; Fu had expected that with Yi Xinming and “Nansheng” dead, Qi Yang would be upset, but it seemed he had overthought it.

Had he known it would be like this, he should have dealt with Yi Xinming sooner.

Qi Yang knew Fu Mingnan was studying him. After Nansheng left, Qi Yang couldn’t shake the feeling that this departure wasn’t a departure in the usual sense—after all, that person had exuded something unusual from head to toe.

Suddenly there were two fewer tools,

Although Kang Lian and Yang Jiang remained, these two were no match for the other pair.

Qi Yang looked up and glanced back at Fu Mingnan, the man who served as the supervisor; sometimes his expressions reminded him of Nan Sheng. Maybe this man could also be developed into his new tool.

But Qi Yang wasn’t in a hurry yet; there was plenty of time, no need to rush now.

Yang Jiang drew first, but his luck was poor — with fifty percent odds he happened to pull a white ball. Holding the white ball, his eyes shone as he looked at the Overseer: “Can I draw again?”

Fu Mingnan curved his lips into a faint smile and said nothing; his gaze was full of menace.

Holding his white ball, Yang Jiang suddenly wilted like a frost-bitten eggplant.

Kang Lian went up next and drew; she was lucky and got a black ball.

The three of them each drew at Qiao Ran’s spot; only Qiao Ran got a black ball. “Looks like I’m still pretty lucky,” Qiao Ran said, shaking the black ball in his hand with a smile.

Beside him, Yang Jiang clenched his black ball, staring at Kang Lian and Qiao Ran with envy and jealousy.

Qi Yang was the last to draw. As he stepped forward, the cardboard box shifted silently. Beneath that stone slab hid a ghostly creature. It dumped all the balls from the box and replaced them with others—every one of them black.

This was ordered by the Overseer, the ghost thought. The Overseer had clearly come to check whether any players or NPCs were breaking the rules, yet he himself was flouting them. But what could they do? These lowly monsters could never see the top boss and couldn’t report the Overseer. Besides, the most important point was that the top boss had instructed them to keep a close eye on Qi Yang, which had frightened Qi Yang.

The ghost guessed that perhaps such cheating was allowed in the boss’s eyes, so it could only follow the orders.

The ghost hid below; after swapping the ball it no longer moved. He looked up as a long, graceful hand reached into the box, grasped for a moment, seized a black orb, and then withdrew.

They can only be black balls, because they’re all black balls.

“You’re lucky too.” Qiao Ran saw Qi Yang had also taken a black ball and walked over, though he had already suspected Qi Yang would pick a black one.

Of the six people, three rode the cable car while three hiked up the mountain — half and half.

Yang Jiang and Qiao Ran’s two teammates stayed behind. The three watched Qi Yang and the others board the cable car. Yang Jiang was secretly thinking that maybe, when the supervisor wasn’t paying attention, they could sneak into the cable car.

No sooner had the thought occurred than it seemed the supervisor had noticed.

The Overseer looked at Yang Jiang and said

He warned him: “Only the cable car they’re on can safely go up; other cable cars will fall halfway.”

Yang Jiang abruptly turned around, staring at the supervisor in shock. The supervisor turned and left; he walked quickly, and in the blink of an eye his tall figure vanished.

After the supervisor’s warning, Yang Jiang immediately abandoned the idea of sneaking onto a cable car and, with the other two, began several hours of hiking up the mountain.

Qi Yang and the others rode the cable car toward the mid-mountain. The car moved slowly through the air, the window half open, and the people inside peered out. They saw rolling mountain ranges, everywhere a pleasing expanse of green—so pervasive it seemed green was the only color in this world.

After more than half an hour the cable car reached the mountainside. The supervisor—who had somehow come up ahead of time—saw it arrive and walked out to personally open the door. When Qi Yang stepped down, Fu Mingnan even reached out to steady him, warning Qi Yang to watch his step.

The two people who got off earlier turned back to look at them. Qi Yang’s expression was perfectly normal, not in the least flattered; if anything, his face seemed even calmer. He politely said thank you, then walked past the supervisor toward Kang Lian and Qiao Ran.

“The cable car is up ahead.” Qiao Ran pointed to the upper left of them, where a glass cable car connected two mountains. Because the floor was glass, it looked pretty shocking from below—anyone with acrophobia would probably be unable to stand, practically forced to crawl.

Qi Yang looked up for a moment but didn’t linger at the cable car. The three of them walked upward.

There was an uphill flight of steps, very steep; you had to hold onto the handrail when going up. Qi Yang walked last. On the cliffside outside the railing crouched numerous ghosts; they were invisible. The reason they were there was the Overseer’s order—to secretly protect Qi Yang.

After climbing the steps and walking a bit further, a relatively spacious small platform appeared. On the outer side of the platform, close to the cliff, was a glass cableway. The glass was rubbed spotless, immaculate; there was no sun here, the sky was darkened, thick leaden clouds densely packed across it, so the transparent glass gave off little light and from certain angles it seemed as if the glass didn’t exist.

“Wait here for them?” Kang Lian asked what Qi Yang and Qiao Ran meant.

“They came up several hours ago.” Qi Yang looked down toward the foot of the mountain, but couldn’t see it—only the lush green forest.

Kang Lian went to check on Qiao Ran again. Qiao Ran’s thought was much the same as Qi Yang’s: “Let’s go first. This cableway isn’t wide; if they come, we’ll have to go separately.” It’s impossible to walk side by side.

Let’s go.

Both decided to leave first, so Kang Lian didn’t insist.

“You go in the middle.” Qi Yang told Kang Lian not to go first, then looked at Qiao Ran and said, “You go first.”

Qiao Ran was quite pleased that Qi Yang was treating him like a teammate at that moment.

“How about leaving a phone number after we clear the game?” Qiao Ran wanted to see Qi Yang again in the living world.

Qi Yang didn’t nod immediately: “We’ll talk about it after you clear the level.”

Qiao Ran’s lips lifted slightly. He knew Qi Yang was still wary of him, but that didn’t matter — as long as it wasn’t a flat refusal, Qiao Ran believed there was a chance to work on it.

After clearing so many levels, this was the first time he had taken a real interest in another player.

The three of them walked toward the cableway. Just as they stepped onto it and moved forward, disaster suddenly struck: many grotesque, contorted ghosts began to appear both in front of and behind them. None of the monsters’ limbs were intact; arms and legs were bent and twisted in all sorts of ways. Some had hands twisted up behind their necks, whole arms moving in eerie, impossible ways that shouldn’t occur under any normal circumstance.

The three of them stopped.
