I can’t carry it, and it’s impossible to bring it back to the living world. Even if I could, I have no place to put it,” Qi Yang said, directly rejecting Nan Sheng’s offer.

Nan Sheng didn’t press the matter. If Qi Yang didn’t want to take the statues now, there would be many other things later. Anything Qi Yang desired, Nan Sheng could pluck from the heavens like a star.

Compared with the leisurely atmosphere around Qi Yang and the others, the rest weren’t so calm. Once everyone entered the statue cluster and started walking, their eyes quickly grew tired. There was the slow, dull sound of a statue moving — clearly someone had tried to push a statue aside and discovered an exit beneath it. But when the opening appeared, no player dared to go down. Of the 85 statues, only three of the openings beneath them were the way to life; 85 versus 3 — the odds of finding the correct one were vanishingly small.

“There must be some pattern, right?” Yang Jiang’s puzzled voice came. His brow was tightly furrowed. He looked left and right; everywhere he turned were statues, and each one seemed as if it couldn’t hide the way out — all of them seemed like dead ends.

He’d cleared a few levels himself; in puzzles without obvious clues, there were always hidden bits of information of one kind or another. Yang Jiang walked up to a statue, recalling how earlier at the bamboo arrows there had been bamboo pieces you could rotate, and turning a certain pole had caused all the arrows to stop.

Could this place work the same way? With that thought, Yang Jiang ran both hands over the body of a statue eagle, pressing its eyes, grabbing at its head to see if he could twist it.

However, after all that fuss, there was nothing movable on the eagle statue—no mechanisms of any kind.

“There’s nothing at all!” Yang Jiang shouted in frustration.

Hearing Yang Jiang’s voice, Qi Yang turned his head. He didn’t speak. His plan was to wait until the other players had all chosen doors before casually picking one himself. He was already quite certain that he possessed some sort of special trait within this game space; by going last he wouldn’t draw anyone’s attention, and no one would know whether the door he chose was truly a door to life or a death door turned into a door to life.

Qi Yang’s gaze sharpened. Seeing that Nan Sheng was still beside him with no sign of going to look for the Birth Gate, Qi Yang asked, “Aren’t you going to look for it?”

Nan Sheng shook his head, his gaze fixed on Qi Yang full of devotion: “With so many statues, finding the door to life won’t be easy. Rather than wasting time, I’d rather stay by your side.”

Hearing something like a confession from Nan Sheng, Qi Yang’s eyes merely grew cold.

He glanced at Nan Sheng twice.

“If I end up choosing the door of death later, don’t blame me if you die.” Qi Yang walked to one side. Everyone else stood at the doors; if he just stood there with his hands clasped doing nothing, it would arouse suspicion, so he pretended to search.

“I wouldn’t mind; if I could die with you, I’d be more than willing.” Nan Sheng’s words were syrupy sweet.

Qi Yang shot a cold glance at Nan Sheng. This person was completely different from when they first met. If he’d known then that Nan Sheng appeared cold but was actually a smoldering flirt, Qi Yang figured he never would have dragged him into the room.

Qi Yang walked to the longest dragon among the stone statues and reached out to lightly touch its tail. Nan Sheng stood to one side, his eyes fixed on Qi Yang; Qi Yang looked at the stone dragon, while Nan Sheng gazed at Qi Yang with affectionate intensity.

“Tone it down.” Qi Yang suddenly spoke.

Tone down what? Nan Sheng didn’t immediately catch on.

“Tone down your gaze. If no one else were here, would you have leapt on me?” Those eyes were too blatant. But this frankness hadn’t yet repelled Qi Yang as much as that guy Zhong Chong did; the other’s stare was like a venomous snake, which Qi Yang very much disliked.

“If I really threw myself at you, would you accept me?” Nan Sheng asked.

Qi Yang smiled and countered, “What do you think?”

“I thought you might kick me away.” Nan Sheng knew Qi Yang didn’t really like him, unlike how he felt about Qi Yang.

Qi Yang laughed silently; that expression clearly said, So you knew all along.

“Qi Yang!” Kang Lian walked up behind him as Qi Yang crossed to the other side of the dragon’s body to continue pretending to look for clues.

Kang Lian had actually arrived a few seconds earlier, but at that time Qi Yang was talking with Nan Sheng. She had heard some of their conversation and, without thinking, stayed silent and stood there waiting.

Qi Yang turned and saw Kang Lian. Her gaze flicked between him and Nan Sheng; she had probably overheard their exchange.

“What is it?” Qi Yang asked. He didn’t think Kang Lian had come over just to say hello.

Kang Lian stepped closer to Qi Yang, her brow still furrowed, showing no sign of relaxing.

“Did you find any clues? I checked several statues; there are no numbers on them, nor any visible secret buttons.” Kang Lian felt that with her own intelligence it would probably be impossible to find the life gate correctly even in half an hour, so she went straight to find Qi Yang. Qi Yang was much smarter than them, and since he had survived until now, Kang Lian knew most of the credit should go to him.

This time, Kang Lian felt she had to rely on Qi Yang to check in at the Stone Statue Group.

Knowing Kang Lian wanted to find the exit quickly so she could take the injured Yi with her, that was fine.

Xinming returned to the inn and treated Yi Xinming’s wounds. Qi Yang also wanted to get back as soon as possible, but if they left now and suddenly found the exit, Qi Yang knew they would likely be suspected. The players here weren’t like those in the arena; many were veterans who had cleared it multiple times. Qi Yang knew he had to be cautious and not reveal his uniqueness. As for claiming that Mingming had the ability to turn the Gate of Death into a Gate of Life and thus should lead all the players, Qi Yang never considered that. He was unrelated to the other players, and he was too lazy to invent excuses or lies. Many of these players were clever and might easily spot inconsistencies in his words.

Qi Yang wasn’t the sort of person with a martyr complex who would expose himself to save others.

As for Yi Xinming, the wounds on his face were relatively minor. If they had damaged internal organs, Qi Yang would have immediately sought out the fan door to descend and save him; but since it was just facial injuries and the bleeding had stopped, Qi Yang believed Yi Xinming could hold on for another half hour.

Faced with Kang Lian’s anxious questioning, Qi Yang could only say that he currently had no leads.

Seeing Qi Yang also at a loss, Kang Lian’s face grew even more desperate, but then a light appeared in her eyes. There was still time; even if only one minute remained, she couldn’t give up searching. Between sitting and waiting to die and holding on until the last minute, Kang Lian chose the latter.

“Then I’ll go look elsewhere. There won’t be no clues here.” Kang Lian turned and left.

Watching Kang Lian walk to the right, Qi Yang narrowed his eyes slightly.

The group of six were also searching for clues, but compared to the other players they didn’t seem particularly anxious. Among them, Qiao Ran, who had a pair of beautiful phoenix eyes, stayed in the statue cluster for a while. After confirming there was nothing special about the statues, he turned and walked out, up the steps, and onto the platform.

After all, he was a seasoned player who’d cleared it more than ten times; a level of difficulty like this was hardly anything in Qiao Ran’s eyes.

Since there were no clues on the statues, perhaps they had been searching in the wrong place from the start — they shouldn’t have been looking down below; they needed to try a different spot and go up to take a look.

When he had been standing on top earlier, Qiao Ran had felt that the statues in the pit were arranged with some kind of pattern. He walked slowly along the circular edge outside the pit, watching the scene below carefully. The players were still scurrying around like headless flies looking for clues; some were even crouched on the ground scraping at the stone slabs with their hands—truly a desperate, haphazard attempt.

Qiao Ran remained unhurried; he had always been very confident in himself, and He was born the kind of kid everyone else envied: he caught on quickly to anything. Things that took ordinary people years to master he could learn in days. Everyone around him felt both admiration and jealousy, and Qiao Ran once thoroughly enjoyed being looked up to. He never lacked anything—his family had power and influence, he was good-looking—he seemed blessed by heaven itself. Perhaps because he’d never been deprived of anything as a child, whatever he wanted he could get. But as he grew up, one day Qiao Ran suddenly found he couldn’t summon much interest in anything. He raced cars, drank, hooked up and partied, gambled—even did his share—but he never touched drugs. Many around him did, but seeing them consumed and dominated by powders or crystalline substances, becoming manic and frenzied, struck him as pathetic; he’d always preferred to be the one in control, never controlled by something else.

Just as he began to think his future would be this dull, interestless drift, one day he suddenly crossed over into this terrifying escape game. Unlike other players who arrived panicked and afraid, Qiao Ran fell for the place immediately. He loved the thrill and danger he couldn’t experience in the mundane world—this place was paradise to him.

He savored the intense pleasure of walking a death-defying tightrope at any moment. He even wanted more: to become the one who ruled this game space. Why not? He had already detected some patterns and was slowly testing them.

In this game, that person named Qi Yang, and the man beside him who existed like a loyal hound—those two were different from the others. The moment Qiao Ran saw them, he felt a kinship.

Standing on the high ground, Qiao Ran could clearly see the expressions of every player among the stone statues, including Qi Yang and the others. Qi Yang appeared to be searching for clues like everyone else, but Qiao Ran couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t as earnest as he seemed.

Qiao Ran stared at the two of them for a while, and as if sensing a scrutinizing gaze from above, Qi Yang twisted his head to look. He saw Qiao Ran standing above the wall, his stare seeming to see through his disguise. Qi Yang slightly lifted his chin—what good would it do even if he could tell? The true secret on his body was something Qiao Ran couldn’t figure out no matter how hard he tried.

Qiao Ran walked on top of it. Most players weren’t paying attention to others; they were all busy trying to find any possible clues. Qi Yang’s mind hadn’t been focused on the clues either, but when he noticed Qiao Ran leaving the stone group and running up onto the high wall, he could more or less guess what Qiao Ran was doing. It was obvious that his way of thinking was much broader than the average person’s; since the statues..

There’s no useful information on the body; it’s most likely that the method was wrong.

Qi Yang had never really thought about it, so he was a bit surprised when he saw Qiao Ran. Watching Qiao Ran walk in circles—he wasn’t playing around, he was using his own method to search—Qi Yang instinctively felt that perhaps Qiao Ran would be the first to find a life exit. Whether Qiao Ran would share his method with everyone after finding it was another matter; Qi Yang guessed he probably wouldn’t. That person simply didn’t seem like someone who enjoyed helping others.

Qiao Ran searched from the high ground; Qi Yang stayed below. As the game’s boss, Nan Sheng of course knew everything. He knew exactly which of the three statues hid the three life exits. Seeing a player find a way to get close to a clue so quickly, Nan Sheng couldn’t help but look at Qiao Ran a little longer. He had reviewed the profiles of every player in this game and knew Qiao Ran was different from the others: he had successfully cleared the game ten times and, after clearing it, continued to choose to play through again. Ten runs versus eight or nine—even a difference of one or two in number carried a significant difference in nature.

Players like Qiao Ran who have cleared the game more than ten times are given a special chance by Nansheng if they fail in a subsequent run, but whether to seize it is up to them—Nansheng likes clever people, and that never changes.

“Aren’t you going up to take a look?” Nan Sheng asked, testing Qi Yang’s reaction. He was confident that with Qi Yang’s intelligence he must have guessed something, but so far he hadn’t seen any special behavior from him — he was still doing useless work. Nan Sheng was close enough to see clearly that Qi Yang’s mind had no intention of finding a way up.

Is he not afraid his few friends will walk into the gateway of death?

“You can go up.” Qi Yang told Nan Sheng to go up; he himself wouldn’t. The steps were steep and had to be climbed up and down—he’s a pregnant husband, he didn’t want to climb stairs.

“Qi Yang, I’ve noticed you always manage to surprise people.” This made Nan Sheng even more interested in Qi Yang.

Nan Sheng’s interest was written in his eyes; Qi Yang noticed and curved his lips in a smile. “I’ve also noticed you always seem to be this fussy.”

Nan Sheng was taken aback for a moment, then burst into a hearty laugh.

“This is the first time someone’s called me long-winded.”

Qi Yang stepped away from Nan Sheng. To him, these statues all seemed more handsome than Nan Sheng. Seeing Qi Yang instantly return his attention to the statues, Nan Sheng felt a twinge of jealousy. He had been thinking of giving Qi Yang some of the statues—after all, he seemed to like them—but now his urge had turned into wanting to smash every single statue to bits, to powder.

Qi Yang vaguely sensed something off about Nan Sheng’s aura, twisted his head to glance at him, and Nan Sheng immediately forced a smile, not letting Qi Yang notice his intentions.

Half an hour—thirty minutes—time passed quickly. The enormous hourglass floating in the center looked as if it would finish leaking any moment. Some players, unable to find the so-called clues or figure out which statue concealed the passage to life, began to lose control of their emotions.

Many people grew restless. Kang Lian’s situation was much the same. She climbed to higher ground and, together with Yang Jiang, tended to the unconscious Yi Xinming. The players around them wore grim faces; some clutched at their hair with both hands as if they might tear it out at any moment.

When Qiao Ran had walked about one and a half times along the circular wall he noticed a pattern—actually it was ridiculously simple. Once he found it he even felt he’d been slow; he should have noticed it when he first arrived. After spotting the rule, Qiao Ran traced one straight line after another with his eyes. The statues weren’t placed at random but followed a definite pattern: of the 85 statues, 82 stood on a straight line that connected to the central stone dragon. Qiao Ran linked those statues together, and the three remaining statues that weren’t on the line—if nothing unexpected happened—the life gate would be beneath those three.

It took only about five minutes from the start to find the pattern; for the remaining twenty-odd minutes Qiao Ran didn’t move. He walked over to the overseer, who was standing in one spot, and when Qiao Ran approached he ostentatiously greeted him.

“Hi!”

The supervisor studied Qiao Ran’s expression briefly and came to a conclusion: “You found it?”

It was a question, but the tone implied certainty.

Qiao Ran smiled as bright as spring. He crouched down by the high wall, didn’t answer the supervisor, and instead asked, “How many do you think will survive this time?”

“At least one.” The supervisor stared at the back of Qiao Ran’s head.

“Hahaha, didn’t expect your personality to be much more interesting than your appearance. I must have at least five, maybe more.” Qiao Ran guessed.

Suddenly he turned his head and looked up at the Overseer beside him, his phoenix-like eyes full of meaning: “I did notice, you know. There’s a player down there who seems different. Do you like him?”

Qiao Ran opened his mouth and threw out an explosive remark.

“Yes.” The Overseer did not deny it; his originally stern, impassive face slowly changed, seeming to soften a little.

“He’s really lucky to be noticed by the Overseer. Aren’t these games something you can only beat if the Overseer lets you?” Qiao Ran said enviously.

“He is special.” The monitor

the overseer said.

“Her face is nice, but it seems nothing else is particularly special. Why not consider me instead?” Qiao Ran was still squatting, which made him seem lower in position, but the arrogance in his features was obvious.

“You? Would you be willing to be a puppet under someone else’s control?” The Overseer smiled, his gaze toward Qiao Ran cold.

Qiao Ran was slightly surprised, then laughed: “No. I prefer to control others, just like you.”

The Overseer looked away. Although he didn’t know exactly what Qiao Ran wanted, this man needed to be watched.

“Hey, aren’t you afraid I’ll use the secrets you just revealed?” Qiao Ran asked, puzzled that the Overseer was so candid, answering every question he posed.

“You don’t have that chance.”

Qiao Ran was smart, but no matter how smart he was, how could he have guessed that the person beside Qi Yang was the game’s boss, another body of the Overseer.

“True.” Qiao Ran smiled and nodded. This was, after all, a space of ghosts and monsters; some of them hid in the dark. If he really tried anything against Qi Yang, he probably wouldn’t end up well.

In truth, Qiao Ran never intended to move against Qi Yang. Rather, he was interested in Qi Yang, the kind of interest that wanted to bring him into the fold. It had to be said that Qi Yang’s face had attracted the Overseer, and Qiao Ran was no exception.

Everyone likes beautiful things, and Qi Yang’s looks were the kind people want to keep safe. Qiao Ran’s thinking differed from that man called Zhong Chong; beautiful things should be preserved, not cruelly destroyed.

“Ahhh, where is the birth gate? I can’t find it at all!” a player shouted in desperation.

“Exactly, there’s not a single clue. Three in an 85? How are we supposed to find them?”

“Time’s almost up, what do we do, what do we do?”

“I think the stone dragon in the middle might be where the life gate is. How about we go there?” one player suggested.

“I think so too.” A voice of agreement rose.

Qi Yang watched these players flitting about like headless flies. He leaned against a stone statue; compared to everyone else’s panic, he looked extraordinarily stunned.

Kang Lian and Yang Jiang supported Yi Xinming at the side. They glanced at each other, and Yang Jiang said, “Shall we follow them too?”

Kang Lian didn’t speak. She looked toward Qi Yang, but his attention wasn’t on the central stone dragon; instead he had turned to look at the steps on the right, where a handsome young man with a smile that seemed permanently etched at the corners of his eyes was striding down.

Kang Lian recognized him — he was the one who seemed like the leader of the six-person group.

Qiao

As soon as Jiao Ran climbed down, the other five closed in. They searched around below but found nothing. Seeing Jiao Ran up there with no sign of a clue either, all five frowned, looking increasingly uneasy.

“Did you find anything?” asked the gaunt team member.

Jiao Ran began to act, his expression darkening as he shook his head. “No. This level is too difficult.”

“No way, if even you haven’t found it, then aren’t we going to…” The thin team member trailed off; everything had been explained here. He was a bit superstitious and feared that speaking it aloud would make it come true.

“How about we go to the middle stone dragon?” Qiao Ran asked, putting on an act.

“No — that definitely isn’t the birth gate. Any door could be it, but that one certainly isn’t.” Zhong Chong immediately rejected it. From his experience completing levels, anything too conspicuous only led to death once you went in.

Qiao Ran’s eyes flickered slightly; this Zhong Chong was indeed despicable and vile, but that didn’t mean he had no redeeming qualities at all.

“That stone statue over there, the snake—I’ve checked all the statues, and it’s the lowest placed. I think the life gate might be beneath it,” Zhong Chong said. It was a wild guess; his rationale and the real clue were completely at odds, but of course his luck was just that good—the snake statue he chose happened not to be on any of those ominous linked lines.

Qiao Ran stared as Zhong Chong’s pupils constricted; he was actually quite surprised—Zhong Chong had picked at random and yet had chosen correctly.

“It is indeed the shortest, and the direction of its snake head seems different from the surrounding statues.” Qiao Ran looked at the stone snake and made up a casual reason.

With his approval, no one else in the squad objected, so they chose the Stone Serpent. Some in the team had gone through the game with Qiao Ran twice, and each time Qiao Ran made it through—skill was one factor, but his luck was another; his choices wouldn’t be wrong.

The six people picked their stone snakes and walked over that way.

As they passed in front of Qi Yang and the others, Qiao Ran paused for a moment. Qi Yang was checking how much time was left on the hourglass when his view was suddenly blocked by someone; he withdrew his gaze.

“Want to go together?” Qiao Ran reached out a friendly hand toward Qi Yang.

“What did you choose?” Qi Yang asked.

“The stone snake over there, Zhong Chong picked it. I also think the life gate might be there—though I’m not completely sure.
