Chapter 30: You Did It on Purpose

Xu Yannuo frowned slightly. The library was very quiet, so she could only tilt her head up and whisper to him, “What do you want?”

Chen Ciyi merely smiled without responding. Then, he looked past Xu Yannuo’s gaze and focused on the books on the shelf. Xu Yannuo glanced at him again, and after confirming he had no further intentions, she ignored him and turned back to continue searching for books.

Her fingers trailed along the spines of the books as she read the titles. After scanning about a meter’s worth, she finally spotted her first literary classic among a pile of reference books\u2014Lu Xun’s *The Scream*. A faint smile curled at the corners of Xu Yannuo’s lips as she reached out to pull the book from the shelf. But just as she was about to do so, a fair, slender, and well-defined hand suddenly reached out from behind her, touching the book a fraction of a second before she could and swiftly pulling it out. Right before her eyes, the hand placed the book on the highest shelf\u2014completely out of her reach.

Xu Yannuo took a deep breath and clenched her fists. But she was at school, and in the school library at that\u2014what could she do? She couldn’t do anything, not even raise her voice. Suppressing her anger, she held it in and, without turning around, continued walking deeper into the shelves to search for the next literary book.

She took a few steps forward. There were five sets of bookshelves in this row, and on the third set, she spotted another literary book\u2014*Since It’s Come to This, Let’s Eat First*. Although it was a collection of essays, well, something was better than nothing. Xu Yannuo reached out, this time determined to act faster. Yet, before her hand could even touch the book, that fair, slender hand with distinct knuckles once again beat her to it. The long, nimble fingers deftly hooked the book, swiftly pulling it out and, right before her eyes, lifting it over her head to place it on the highest shelf. At this speed, Chen Ciyi must have spotted the book long ago\u2014he didn\u2019t take it until she saw it, deliberately waiting for her to find it joyfully only to snatch it away first. This was clearly just to mess with her!

Xu Yannuo was utterly infuriated. Though he didn’t turn around, he could practically envision Chen Ciyi’s smugly upturned lips and suppressed laughter behind him.

Fine! She could endure it. She wouldn’t turn around\u2014if she did, he would surely look even more smug right now. Anyway, there were still two more bookshelves behind her. She refused to believe she couldn\u2019t find the next book.

Xu Yannuo quickly walked toward the last two rows. There were two more literature books there, but she didn\u2019t know what they were\u2014for a very simple reason. This time, Chen Ciyi didn\u2019t wait for her to find them before snatching them away to provoke her. Instead, he moved ahead of her, walking past her from behind and pulling two books from the last two shelves, placing them directly on the topmost shelf. His movements were so fast that Xu Yannuo barely had time to catch the color of the covers, let alone read the titles.

Just as Xu Yannuo stood there in shock, Chen Ciyi had already left the row of shelves and was heading toward the exit. When he reached the end, he turned back to look at her\u2014just as Xu Yannuo was staring at him in bewilderment.

Their eyes met. The corner of Chen Ciyi\u2019s lips curled slightly, his handsome brows lifting in a faint, teasing challenge. Then, with a smile, he turned and walked away.

Just short of giving her a thumbs-down, huh!

Xu Yannuo instantly recalled the hair on Chen Ciyi’s head that she had cut…

This was revenge!

No wonder he hadn’t made a move when he saw her in the morning. Other classes had already been assigned this homework yesterday, so he was just waiting for her here?

Xu Yannuo took another deep breath, suppressing her anger. Maybe there were still literature books on the shelves that he had missed. Just as she was about to continue searching, the class warning bell rang, followed by the librarian shouting through a megaphone, “Class time has arrived. Students still in the library must return to the main building immediately. Those who haven’t borrowed books should not attempt to do so now\u2014come back in the afternoon.”

The sound of the megaphone calling people grew closer, indicating that someone was inspecting each bookshelf to shoo people away. The previously quiet library now became noisy, filled with voices and the sound of hurried footsteps.

No wonder Chen Ciyi didn\u2019t wait for her to find the last two books and then snatch them away to annoy her\u2014instead, he directly picked them out and placed them on top. And that expression, that smile he had when he left now carried a deeper meaning. Damn it, he had timed it perfectly to set her up.

The librarian kept shooing people away, and Xu Yannuo had no choice but to return to class. Since the library wasn\u2019t close to the teaching building, by the time she ran back to her classroom, the bell had already rung, and class had started two minutes earlier. Normally, being a few minutes late for English class wouldn\u2019t have been a big deal, but as luck would have it, the English teacher had swapped classes with the biology teacher.

The biology teacher was a middle-aged woman who seemed to have hit menopause early. The moment she saw Xu Yannuo arriving late, she flew into a rage and immediately ordered her to stand by the door. “Xu Yannuo, how could you be late too? Stand right there and listen! Every single day, it\u2019s the same thing\u2014those who are always late keep being late, and now even the ones who aren\u2019t usually late are joining in. Are you all trying to rebel or something?” After scolding Xu Yannuo, she turned her glare to the rest of the class. Clearly, Xu Yannuo wasn\u2019t the only one who had returned late\u2014she was just the latest, and since she was usually obedient, her tardiness now was the final straw that ignited the already furious biology teacher. “One late, two late, three late\u2014when will this end? From now on, anyone who\u2019s late will stand at the back!”

The classroom fell silent instantly, the students didn’t even dare to breathe after being yelled at. Class monitor Xu Jingjing timidly raised her hand and stood up to explain, “Teacher, we didn’t do it on purpose. We went to the library to borrow books\u2014the Chinese teacher assigned homework. The whole school went.”

Originally, Xu Jingjing just wanted to explain the reason to calm the chemistry teacher down, but it backfired. Instead of cooling off, the teacher grew even angrier. She slammed the table loudly, raising her voice another decibel, “The whole school went, but did the whole school arrive late? Isn\u2019t it just those few from your class who were late? And now, add Xu Yannuo to the list\u2014good and bad, all tardy. Do you all not want to attend anymore? And with your Chinese homework\u2014do whatever you want after class, but don\u2019t you dare mess around in my lesson!”

After that, the class finally ended under the biology teacher’s high-pressure roaring. Xu Yannuo also returned to his seat after the bell rang.

Returning to her seat, she didn’t do anything else but stared directly at Chen Ciyi. Chen Ciyi didn’t avoid her gaze either; instead, he met her eyes with a bright smile and greeted her cheerfully, “Hey desk mate, missed me after one class apart?”

Xu Yannuo quietly looked at him, thinking, I fucking want to beat you to death.

But in class, she couldn’t act directly.
