After guessing a few things, when he saw Nan Sheng again, his mindset was somewhat different from before.

He couldn’t help thinking that Nan Sheng was truly a great actor. Since he already knew about the pregnancy, yet still pretended complete ignorance, it made Qi Yang even more determined to get that extra bit of flesh out of his belly.

This child was neither what he had expected nor liked; never in a single day had he imagined that someday he could become pregnant, that he could carry a child.

Fate really did enjoy teasing him. Judging by Nan Sheng’s caring attitude toward him—whether genuine or not—Qi Yang had reason to believe that this nonhuman spirit truly wanted the child in his belly.

But whether he could keep the child depended on the other party’s ability.

Qi Yang disliked others controlling him; if he had a choice, he preferred to control others.

After all, control is part of an organism’s instincts.

Before Qi Yang could speak, Du Yong at the bottom of the stairs spoke first: “Qi Ge, do you guys know each other?”

Du Yong was quite surprised; he hadn’t expected to run into Qi Yang’s friend here. He glanced again at Qi Yang’s expression and began to doubt his own assumption.

“Did you come up here to call me for dinner?” Qi Yang ignored Nan Sheng and asked Du Yong.

Du Yong nodded: “Yes, it’s time for dinner.”

Qi Yang walked downstairs and paused slightly as he passed the second floor. At the time, Nan Sheng still thought Qi Yang would ignore him because of how Qi Yang had deceived him in the previous round, but Qi Yang turned and suddenly smiled brightly at him.

“When did you get here?” Qi Yang asked.

“Not long ago.” Nan Sheng stared into Qi Yang’s eyes.

“That one, come downstairs for dinner.” Qi Yang’s smile didn’t fade at the corner of his mouth; his face was bright and captivating.

Nan Sheng’s gaze darkened. He would never refuse Qi Yang’s request; if this person asked him to die, he wouldn’t even blink, because death had never been something he feared.

A few people went downstairs. Du Yong sensed something odd about the atmosphere between Qi Yang and the man called Nan Sheng: they knew each other, but their relationship didn’t seem to be that of friends.

Du Yong suppressed the doubt in his heart and didn’t ask too many questions.

The players were all eating in the dining hall. It was very large, with one huge dining table where everyone sat casually, those who were more familiar with each other sitting together.

Most of them had been here for a while. In this villa it was calm and peaceful, nothing unexpected had happened. People were on guard, but at least they felt that even if the game were about to start, it probably wouldn’t be happening right now.

So when the servants brought the food, one of the dishes was meatball soup, served as individual bowls with a single meatball in each. The renowned player ate first; he bit into his meatball and then let out an “ow.”

There was a hard object in the meatball that hit the player’s tooth; when he made a sound, everyone’s attention turned to him—curious about a meal, making a fuss over nothing.

Then, in front of everyone, the player took a small transparent bead out of their mouth.

The bead was completely clear, with the number 11 in the middle.

“11, there’s the number 11 inside.” the player said in a very high voice.

“What’s going on, what did you just eat?” the questioning player, not having noticed that the other had eaten a pill, hurriedly asked.

“I ate the dumpling—it was in this bowl of soup.” The player pointed at the bowl in front of him, then pulled a napkin and wiped the glass bead clean.

A very ordinary bead, but once the numbers appeared inside it suddenly became extraordinary.

“Don’t tell me the dumplings in our bowls have numbers too.” The player joked, and looking at the others’ expressions, everyone subtly shifted.

The smile on that player’s face slowly faded. He poked a dumpling in his bowl with his chopsticks; when he did, his pupils contracted.

He pried the meatball open with chopsticks; inside there really was a glass bead. He took out the bead—the number on the player’s bead was 5.

“5!” He couldn’t hide his astonishment.

The others all began poking at their own meatballs. Some weren’t afraid; they put the meatballs in their mouths, chewed the meat and spat out the glass beads.

Then everyone spoke the numbers they had gotten.

Qi Yang’s glass bead was found for him by Nan Sheng; it was number 15, while Nan Sheng’s own was 12.

“I’m eight.” Du Yong picked up a glass bead and held it to his eye to examine it. He turned to look at Yuan Yuan, who would return the number ten.

After everyone had received their glass beads, a young player who had drawn bead number 2 raised his hand.

“I think we should do it this way: start counting from 1, calling the numbers in order.” The player’s idea was to first take a look at how these numbers were distributed.

The player who got bead number 1 started shouting “one,” and the others followed in sequence—two, three, four—until it was Du Yong’s turn; he raised his hand and said “eight,” then nine followed, continuing until the very last person said “eighteen.”

“Did anyone not get a bead?” the player with bead number 2 asked.

No one answered, which meant eighteen people, eighteen beads.

“What are these beads for?” Player 5 held a bead, looking it over from every angle, but couldn’t see anything special—like the glass marbles they used to play with as kids.

He tossed the bead onto the dining table; it gave a light bounce.

“Setting usefulness aside for now, since it showed up here, I think everyone knows where we are. From my experience so far, nothing irrelevant appears.”

“The beads are small, so everyone keep them safe—be careful not to drop them. If this bead is linked to each of our lives, and dropping it means losing your life…” Player 2 squinted as he spoke, watching the expressions of those around the table. His gaze lingered briefly on Qi Yang and Nan Sheng—just a moment, two or three seconds—before moving on.

“Then don’t say you weren’t warned.”

Number Two’s words sounded indifferent, but once that line came out, everyone took it to heart. There were newcomers in this game, but very few—only a handful—and those few were relatively calm in temperament. When a veteran warned you, you listened. No matter how clever or lucky you were, this was a game world, a world of ghosts; human strength, however great, couldn’t overpower the supernatural. Being cautious was never wrong.

Qi Yang lowered his head to look at the 15th bead in his hand, his gaze calm, completely unlike the other players who were so cautious; even if he lost the bead, the spirits here wouldn’t dare take his life.

Still, Qi Yang put the bead away.

After the matter with the bead, things at the dining table returned to normal, and no more strange occurrences took place.

After the meal, some players stayed in the downstairs hall. There was no television, but fortunately there was a study filled with books; some people took books down and read to pass the time.

There was also a gym and a small bar. The players spread out and didn’t all gather together.

Qi Yang went to the open-air terrace on the third floor. It was called open-air, but glass had been installed all around, so the frost and snow from outside couldn’t get in.

Du Yong and the others had originally planned to go upstairs with them, but Qi Yang said, “I have something to discuss with Nan Sheng privately,” so Du Yong and Yuan Yuan nodded and didn’t follow.

The two of them hadn’t gone far either; they were on the third-floor balcony watching the snow outside.

The garden was planted with flowers, some blooming brilliantly; among them were perfumed lilies, their subtle scent refreshing and intoxicating.

Qi Yang walked into the garden, saying he had something to discuss with Nan Sheng, but once inside, it was just the two of them and Qi Yang was only busy looking at the flowers in the garden, his mind nowhere near Nan Sheng.

Nan Sheng stood beside Qi Yang, watching him who was intently admiring the flowers.

He remembered the last round of the game, toward the end when he was in the identity of Fu Mingnan, and the few things Qi Yang had said to him. It seemed Qi Yang had already guessed some of it; Qi Yang was very clever, something Nan Sheng had known for a long time—why he had originally concealed the truth from him.

He hadn’t planned to keep his identity hidden forever, nor to create two more versions of himself without expecting Qi Yang to eventually notice; in fact, deep down he hoped Qi Yang would discover the connections sooner.

What he was curious about now was how much Qi Yang had already uncovered.

He had prepared some explanations—lines that could make sense on their own and steer Qi Yang’s suspicions in another direction.

But since Qi Yang didn’t ask, Nan Sheng didn’t intend to say anything for now—being too eager would only expose things.

Qi Yang walked slowly through the garden and stopped in front of a cluster of roses. The blossoms were abundant and radiantly in bloom. Compared to roses, Qi Yang preferred camellias; their fragrance was stronger.

There were so many flowers, yet so far he hadn’t seen a single bee or any other insect. No matter how realistic it looked, Qi Yang knew this place wasn’t real.

The game hadn’t started, but Qi Yang refused to believe it truly wouldn’t. He preferred to think that greater dangers than ever awaited them ahead; this current tranquility was nothing more than the calm before the storm.

Qi Yang walked over and sat on the bench beside the rosebush. He looked up at the man who had been standing by his side the whole time and now stood in front of him.

The man had gone down into the underground passage with Yi Xinming and the other players during the last round of the game and never came back up. Yi Xinming was gone, but the man was still alive and well.

Qi Yang didn’t care why the man was still alive; he wanted to know something else.

“Is Yi Xinming really dead?” Qi Yang’s question surprised Nan Shengwei; he never would have expected Qi Yang to ask about Yi Xinming first.

It seems that man occupied a significant place in Qi Yang’s mind—fortunately, he’s dead.

“Yes, he’s dead.” Nan Sheng nodded.

“Really dead, completely dead?” When Qi Yang asked about his friend’s death, his expression didn’t change at all; he looked as if he were asking about the death of someone irrelevant.

“Completely dead.” Nan Sheng wasn’t sure what exactly Qi Yang wanted to ask, and he wouldn’t reveal any more information.

Qi Yang’s mouth curved slightly. He folded both arms across his chest and asked another question: “Decide before you answer — is it the body that’s completely dead, or has the soul been utterly reduced to ash as well?”

Nan Sheng’s gaze sharpened; he now understood what Qi Yang wanted to know.

“If the body is completely dead, as for the soul, I haven’t died in that way, so I don’t know.” Nan Sheng was telling the truth here — he hadn’t transitioned from a player’s identity into the game’s boss; you could say he was part of the game’s space itself.

“Then I understand.” The existence of monsters meant that the souls of the people in this space did indeed exist.

Qi Yang believed that one day in the future he might meet Yi Xinming again. Given his current special status, Qi Yang even thought that that future might not be too far off.

So he didn’t feel much sorrow or grief over Yi Xinming’s death.

Qi Yang turned his head and looked out the window. Under the room’s light, he could see the heavy snow falling outside, seeming denser than it had been earlier.

["post-3324","chapter","type-chapter","status-publish","hentry
["GET
